It was a fantastic day at the island! The gulls were plentiful but thankfully so were the sharks. The sharks today ranged from a juvenile that was just over 2 meters to a beautiful 4.5 meter female who was just spectacular. She stayed around the boat for both trips today and entertained everyone with her charisma, she was so very graceful. Along with our beautiful 4.5 meter female on our first trip we also had another large female approximately 4.0 meters with parasites on her head, the trailing edge of her dorsal fin and in front of her tail. We welcomed back on old friend from last year as Mumbo Number 5 graced us with her presence. She was named last year by one of our crew members as she is quite a clean shark apart from a number 5 shaped scar on her head! Both trips also saw a juvenile with hook and fishing line snared onto the leading edge of its dorsal fin, not a nice site an one of the reasons our conservation trust, DICT, is so focused on cleaning up the oceans and surrounding areas with such initiatives as the fishing line bins. If this is what today was like we can’t wait until tomorrow…
