Darling it’s better
Down where it’s wetter

Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin’
Full time to floatin’
Under the sea

– The Little Mermaid, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, 1989

The crew and guests of Marine Dynamics take advice from Sebastian the Crab and the Little Mermaid nearly on a daily basis, spending many hours out at sea, floating on anchor, savoring the joys of the ocean, waiting patiently for the chance to dive down and gaze at one of the most feared but fascinating marine creatures.

We were first boat to set out from harbour, straight line into the Shallows and on anchor within 20 minutes and within another 20 minutes we had our first shark appear, a Copper shark that disappeared quickly, perhaps the larger, darker shadow lurking at the back of the boat was the cause of this quick getaway performed by the first shark! The sightings and activity progressed for the day with a few Copper sharks risking approach here and there whilst the Whites were absent and of cause the large, graceful female Whites that we encountered including a 4.0m indiviudal missing the upper lobe to her caudal fin (appears to have been a previous boat strike), the shark with a large, distinctive bite scar on her right flank and one more that briefly visited during the afternoon, similar in size to the previous two but pale in dorsal colour and keeping quite deep when around.

The dolphins and seals were out utlizing the bay as well today with an absolute stunning encounter with some Humpback dolphins off the front of the boat whilst we were on anchor as a number of individuls appeared to be feeding close by, swimming and porpoising, showing off their flukes as they made dives with a smaller Cape fur seal moving through the bay past the boats joining forces with the dolphins chasing bait fish and tailing some of our White sharks!
