Location: Joubertsdam
Water Temperature: 18.0’C + 18.5’C
Depth: 11.4m + 12.2m
Visibility: 1.0m + 0.5m
Number of Sharks: 3 + 10
Conditions: Flat sea with hardly any wind, however overcast with dark waters.
The bay looked like glass this morning as we crossed into the Shallows, we had little to no swell or wind around, however conditions under the water were a bit harder to deal with. The visibilty was a massive challenge today as a red tide made its way through the bay. This red tide is cause by algae blooms which become so numerous they discolour the water. The divers today struggled to see the sharks under the water but we had some sharks that were happy to come nice and close to give us a better view. The first trip saw its first shark after a 20 minute wait and was one we have become acquainted with well recently, a medium sized male with a curled dorsal fin. He decided today to come and go as he pleased and would come by for a few passes every 20-30 minutes just to check up on us! We also had a small juvenile coming by however he was less inclined to interact possibly due to the larger sharks present. The trip took a turn for the better when a large male approximately 4.0m in length showed up and stuck around for the last cage of the morning. The second trip launched this afternoon and headed back onto site, where we had the whole bay to ourselves bar a few small fishing vessels. The sharks arrived quickly and just kept coming this afternoon with a variety of sizes and both male and females around throughout the afternoon. The visibility had decreased this afternoon and most likely the divers felt like they were looking through mud however the sharks were on point as they came close seemingly appearing out of nowhere and giving our divers a bit of a friht before they disappeared into the dark depths. We had our curl finned male and large male from the first trip plus many more including “Little Rosie” and a huge male, the largest of the day coming in at approximately 4.3m. A calm day on the water with some great action from the big fish themselves…
