We are often asked if there is a best time of day to come join us on an adventure to find the majestic white shark. The answer to the question is always no; there is no best time to increase your likelihood of seeing sharks here in Gansbaai. Every single day is different and every single trip is different. Today this rang more true than ever.
We had some amazing sightings of copper sharks on all of our trips today, with visits from several different sharks varying in sizes from approximately 1.6 meters to 2.8 meters. One of our trips was visited by a short-tailed stingray, a close relative to a shark. These large animals are typically bottom dwellers but just like their sharky cousins, they are very curious and will occasionally come investigate objects floating on the surface.
Two of our trips were extremely lucky and were visited by white sharks. One trip had a quick glimpse at an approximately 3.2 meter pale coloured male as he took a leap at the bait line then disappeared. The other trip was visited for a couple of minutes at the end of our trip by an approximately 3.5 meter female white shark with a small wound in front of her dorsal fin. She examined the bait line and seal decoy from below, surfacing twice to make an attempt at each line.
While we had just a quick glimpse from 2 white sharks, these sightings made these trips extra special. It was a great sign that the sharks are still in the bay despite not appearing at our boat for the past 2 days. We look forward to what tomorrow bring us and hope that the white sharks continue to make their way back into our bay.
