What’s scarier than an ocean with sharks? An ocean without them! It has been three weeks since our last White shark sighting, something that was generally unheard of prior to 2017 in this area, but these extended periods of little to no sightings has become a scary reality here in Gansbaai (for more information please see previous blog here).
Today was the day we had been waiting for…a White shark sighting! We set off early this morning with stunning conditions and rumours circulating that earlier launching boats had seen what we had been hoping for.
Once settled on anchor we waited, patient but alert for any sign of a shark and within 20 minutes we locked eyes on our first White shark for August, a lightly coloured, shy female of about 3.0m came gracefully cruising in, the excitement on board could be felt as our first cage of divers entered the water. We waited for her to show herself again when a shadow was spotted further out, approaching the boat, it turned around and headed away before yet again moving closer, a second shark! A larger and darker female, with parasites on her head and marks on her tail, she was much more active than our first and showed us all why White sharks really are such legendary animals.
The second trip of the day launched with the hopes that they too would be successful in their attempt to see a shark and they were! This trip saw two different species of sharks appearing with one Copper shark and two Whites. The first White shark to appear was a new female for the day, one covered in darkly pigmented scars after her the feisty female from our earlier trip and like that trip she was amazingly active for this group as well.
