This morning we welcomed back an Italian research based group headed by Dr. Primo Micarelli. This is the second trim this year that the group joins Marine Dynamics to conduct observational White shark studies in this area, something they have been doing for many years now. We launched at the early time of 6:30am, with the rising sun guiding us onto anchor in the Shallows, but not before we passed multiple Southern Right whales enjoying the morning light. Once on anchor the team settled into their roles and patiently waited, unfortunately this morning was ruled by the Copper sharks, as atleast three different individuals made their presence known but no White sharks appeared. The sightings on the avian front were a little better with a Common Tern, White-chinned petrel and Giant petrel gliding through our airspace today.
The second trip of the day launched and whilst the Copper sharks showed up and provide our guests with some great shark sightings the White sharks unfortunately yet again did not appear. This trip also had multiple sightings of Southern Right whales, both on the trip out to anchor and on the way back.
The third and final trip of the day launched with the hopes that maybe they would be the lucky ones. This trip followed much in the same way that the previous two did in that the Copper sharks were very much present however the absence of Whites continued.
We hope to have some better news soon on White shark sightings in Gansbaai and would like to extend our thanks to those that joined us today and showed such great patience and understanding.
