Monday mornings are rarely people’s favourite time of the week yet this Monday morning was not at all terrible for those at 5 Geelbek Street, Kleinbaai, the Great White House, our meeting point for shark cage diving trips. With what appeared to be a beautiful, clear day ahead we launched with little to no swell and one of those just above a slight breeze sorts of winds coming through.
Whilst the predictions for the weather and conditions were pretty much spot on our shark sightings were so uncertain and varying today. Wildlife, at the best of times is unpredictable, something we know all too well here after the last 12 months with the White sharks disappearing but what is it that has been influencing our Copper shark sightings so much lately with days of consistent activity replaced not even 24 hours later by slow or no sightings – is it environmental parameters such as the water temperature? Is it seasonality? Or like our Whites, is there a larger predator scarying them off?…we just don’t know.
The morning did see a couple of Coppers, the most frequent being a male we have identified successfully the last three days, yet as the day proceededthe activity decreased with the afternoon experiencing a complete lack of shark sightings. The struggles with shark sightings did not seem to extend to other animals with the bay appearing to teem with life today as we had some nice bird sightings, Cape Fur seals about and two nice moments when Humpback dolphins were visable to those onboard (not a common sight from our shark cage diving vessel, Slashfin), unfortunately though, the sharks seemed to have other agendas to fill for most of the day…
