Trip 1
This morning started off all doom and gloom with overcast skies that threatened to open up and pour down on us at anytime but it held off and eventually cleared. The sea also had a bit more motion to it today with a slight swell and an increasing wind yet whilst the conditions were a litle choppy under the water proved to be quite clear for the standards in this area and after a slow start we had a fantastic shark of shark sightings. The first trip had to show some patience, however after an anchor move we had a large male just over 3.5m show up. This male is easily recognisable from the moment he appears due to the tip of the dorsal fin bending over, something most likely caused by an injury to the dorsal fin that has left the fibres damaged in the fin. The second shark to show up was a juvenile male, estimated at only 2.2m in length, he bravely stuck around with the larger shark for quite a whale before disappearing into the depths. The third and final shark of the day was yet again a male, this time large than our first, measuring in at an estimated 4.0m, this male is one we have seen before over the last few weeks.
Trip 2
The second trip of the day was off to a great start with a juvenile White shark appearing about 10 minutes after the boat did. Not long after appeared another juvenile and a very large White shark over 4.0m in length that spooked the other smaller sharks. Once this shark left the others came back as did others with the arrival of “Dolphin Fin” a small male which became part of DICT’s biopsy program in 2015 as well as “Sellendilloh” on of the coast’s White sharks that Ocearch tagged in 2012 with a SPOT tag that allows large scale, horizontal movements to be monitored. If you are interested in more information on “Sellendilloh” and where he has been please look at Ocearch’s website here.
