Conditions: Misty morning clearing into the afternoon with little swell and slight increase in wind.
Mid week blues? Not here, cause we saw White sharks.
Slashfin launched bright and early, well not so bright as a low blanket of cloud covered the bay however we were first on anchor in the Shallows and set about waiting for our first shark to arrive. Patience was key for the first group this morning as we waited and waited but with an invitation from another boat we moved anchor and hoped for the best and the our groups great patience was rewarded when we finally had our first White shark encounter for the day. This was one of our 3.4m sharks, it proceeded to make some passes and attempt ambush approaches on our decoy allowing our the boat to have a good look at this glorious creature. A huge thankyou to our group this morning, for their patience and understanding and appreciation of the sighting that we had.
Heading out for our second trip we hoped that the shark from earlier was still around, once on anchor we had our first shark within 15 minutes and a different shark at that. This was the female shark we refer to as clamp, due to same markings on her dorsal fin, she slowly cruised around the boat before disappearing and making way for our second shark, another female of similar size but with such different behaviour. This female, sporting a bite scar on the right flank, was active…very active, making multiple passes and trying for the bait and decoy line. We also had a small juvenile make an appearance and the male from the first trip show up right at the end.
Moving into the afternoon our last trip of the day had their first shark appear within 20 minutes, a small juvenile that was quickly followed two more juveniles, great to see the smaller White sharks back in the bay after a BIG March however these three scattered not too long after and for good reason as the alrger sharks came to play. The rest of the trip was dominated by the large females, all around the 4.0m length including our individual with the darkly pigmented scars on the dorsal fin, our feisty female from the second trip, the graceful female lacking the upper lobe to the caudal fin and the largest shark of the day a beautiful 4.5m specimen.
