It was a wild and windy day out in the bay this morning with our one and only trip launching into come choppy conditions. We arrived on anchor just after 7am and the first shark was spotted just after 8am. This shark whilst impressive in size did not appear to want to interact much with the boat at all and was somewhat shy in approaching. This shy behaviour from this one shark continued for quite some time before our second shark of the trip glided in and got as close as possible to us as she swam right across the front of the cage. This shark was “Chardonnay” a sub-adult female we have been seeing in the bay for a few weeks and one that’s name rings very true as her behaviour is particulary interesting as if she herself may have drank a few glasses of wine! Unfortunately she did not stick around however we had a larger female we known show up, “Chuma Tika” completely different in behaviour yet again in that she makes very slow, determined movements, rarely breaks the water’s surface and comes and goes numerous times. The smallest shark of the trip then made and appearance, caused a bit of excitement with its faced paced activity and then left us. The last two sharks of the trip were by far the most active with a large male close to 3.8m in length appearing and spending most of the second half of the trip with us and also a female only a tad smaller called “Neva” coming by. These two made multiple passes by the cage, attempts on both the decoy and bait lines and were responsible for our guests going home with some fantastic photographs and footage.
Some beautiful sightings even with such conditions as those we saw today.
