Sightings: Great White sharks, Bronze Whaler and a Cape Fur seal
Location: Joubertsdam
Water Temperature: Moderate
Visibility: Moderate
A bit sleepy but super excited we started our day trying to find ourselves some great white sharks! And just as we got to the dive location and geared up, we got ourselves not one but three different Great Whites, gliding effortlessly through the water. Even though the visits were quite brief, we were incredibly lucky to see those beautiful animals in their natural environment. We hit some quite times and decided to move our anchor spot and try our luck elsewhwhere, which proved to be a wise decision as Shaun came up to our cage and showed the divers how relaxed a shark can be. Once everyone had their chance in the cage we headed to Gansbaai harbour.
With a quick turn around we were back on our way into the Shallows. As we made our way around Danger Point we were lucky enough to briefly see a Humpback whale in the distance as it moved into deeper waters, but onto the main attraction…the sharks! Once on anchor we had a very fast arrival of our first shark, this was a Bronze whaler but within moments of our divers lowering themselves into the cage we had a Great White shark. This was the juvenile female with a bite scar to her head and distinctive notch from the trailing edge of her dorsal fin. Soon after followed the male known as Shaun the shark, another juvenile albit shy and deep, a male approximately 3.1m in length and the show stopper of the day, an estimated 3.5-3.8m female that first showed up in the bay this season on Wednesday. A Cape Fur seal also appeared to not want to miss out on the cage diving and some of our guests enjoyed the view of these marine mammals from the water.
