Mondays… They’re often a drag, but not for our white sharks! This morning we arrived to our anchor site in stunning sunshine having passed a pair of Southern Wright Whales chilling in the morning warmth. We waited for maybe 15 minutes before the 2.8m female we’ve been seeing for the last few days joined us for some face to face action next to the cage. She circled Slashfin for around 10 minutes giving us some great photo opportunities and keeping the excitement high. It went calm for a while and our cage divers got to play the cage dive quiz while we waited for sharks, which was a good laugh! We were joined towards the end of the trip by a Copper Shark who played around in front of the cage before we departed. On the way back to the harbour we encountered two more Southern Wrights ambling in the sunshine.
For our second trip we had a bit of a wait for our white sharks, but the 3 copper sharks we had kept us on our toes both in the cage and on the boat! They were very playful on this trip eager to show our cage divers all they have to offer. Towards the end of this trip we finally got a white shark, which turned out to be the same individual from the first trip, a smaller juvenile, so it’s good to see she is hanging around in the shallows! Howeve she dissapeared with the arrival of a larger, more active female, one we have been seeing on and off for the last few days, and whilst she does take some time to approach the boat once she is around her behaviour is breathtaking!
The third and final trip of the day launched and we soon found ourselves to be the only boat in the bay. The Copper sharks were quick to show up however the Whites didn’t seem inclined to appear, the decision was made to move anchor and boy was this a good choice as a small female White shark we have not logged recently showed up and stuck around for the rest of our trip. A great way to end a somewhat difficult but successful day!
