“A bit nippy! But an amazing time, loved it!” –   Steph

Location: Joubertsdam
Water Temperature: 14. C – 14.6 C
Depth: 11m
Visibility: 1.m – 1.5m
Number of Sharks: 3 on the first trip and 7 on the second.
Conditions:  A beautiful sea day.

Today was definitely the calm before the storm with this being our last sea day of the week due to an impending cold front. We head out nice and early and arrived at our dive sight just after 8 on our first trip. The visibility has definitely cleared up which made the dive today a little more enjoyable.

We had 3 Great White Sharks around on our first trip with the largest being a beautiful but scarred female who looks to be over 4m in length. Some clients decided that she looked like a “Giddeon” and the name just seemed to stick. Her most recent scars seem to be from an altercation with a Cape Fur Seal, presumably when she was trying to make a meal of it. This has left her face pretty scratched up.

The smallest shark of the first trip was a 3m male which we also had on the second trip. We were lucky enough to have some larger sharks around today with most of them being above the 3m mark!

On the second trip, we were lucky enough to find a baitball complete with a pod of Common Dolphins which was a spectacular sight to witness! This pod was composed of a hundred or so individuals but these amazing animals can form mega pods of up to 10 000 individuals. We had 7 sharks on the second trip including Giddeon and another newly named shark, Clarence. Clarence is named after our videographer on board Slashfin and is a 3.5m animal with a wonky dorsal fin and only half of his right pectoral fin.

We got a couple of great views on the second trip, before heading back to the harbour as content as could be.
