It was an early start this morning for the first day of the month! We had to cancel yesterday’s trips due to bad weather but today it had cleared up and we headed out for a 7am launch. This early trip was the first of three and was booked exclusively for a film crew from the United Kingdom. The sharks didn’t mess around this morning and the first was spotted only moments after arriving at our dive site. This was a lovely female with some scarring along her left side, we have seen this shark previously last year when this injury was still quite new so it was great to see her back and healed and even better was her fantastically active behaviour around the boat! The second trip of the day also started off well with sharks around not too long after we arrived, however they came and went throughout the trip. The two most seen sharks for this trip was the same female from the first trip and “Caroline” the feisty little female we have had around the boat frequently since last Thursday. We were also lucky enough to spot a number of birds other than the usual Kelp gulls including a Giant Petrel and White chinned Petrel, a very friendly Short tailed stingray showed up and we witness a spectacular breaching display by a young Southern Right whale in the distance. The third and final trip started off quite different to the other two…we had close to a three hour wait before a shark would come close to us, we tried many things including moving anchor but no matter what we tried they seemed content on keeping their distance. In the end we had a few turn up and we were able to watch the sharks investigate the left overs of a seal predation as it floated by! On our way back to the harbour this trip also spotted quite a few whales including an active mother and calf pair frolicking in the setting sun! A interesting and ever changing day out in the bay…
