The start of a new month as we move ever so closer to the end of the year…a year that has been very interesting yet extremely difficult here in Gansbaai in regard to the White sharks. With many days of no White shark sightings due to Orca moving through the area we hoped we would start off November with a “Great White” day!
The first trip launched into a slight swell and chilly west wind and whilst it may have been a little choppy on anchor, conditions were still quite nice. Our Copper friends showed up quickly and by the second cage there was atleast five different individuals we were seeing, some coming so close that our divers had eye contact with these beautiful bronzed sharks. The flat sharks more commonly known as a stingray also decided to join us this morning for a few moments as it glided out of the depths before disappearing below.
The second trip of the day launched with a slight change in the conditions as the winds were seen to drop and the bay calm down a tad. Slashfin made its’ way back into the Shallows to find her cage and with not too much of a wait those Copper sharks appeared again. Much like the first trip, these species showed that it is not just White sharks that can cause a stir with the Coppers showcasing their speed and agility, ease at being close to the boat and cage and consistent, nearly continuous activity made all the more interesting due to their schooling behaviour! Not to miss out on all the action the Short-tailed stingray re-appeared for this new group of guests.
The last trip of the day was an exclusive for a group visiting from the United Kingdom. Staying locally, they decided to try their luck at seeing some of the wildlife that makes this area so special. Back on anchor the Copper sharks stayed true to the days’ previous encounters by showing up quickly and allowing the group to enjoy viewing and being safely in the water with a shark. Making three for three the stingray yet again showed itself as did a Southern Right whale as the group finished their trip with a cruise through Shark Alley and a closer look at the Islands and the bird and seal colonies.
A beautiful day to start the new month off, whilst we hoped we would have the White sharks back, unfortunately today was not the day but none the less a stunning day with sharks, rays and more!
