Conditions: Clear skies with little swell and a changing, increasing wind.
7am launch on the first day of the month…no problem! The sun rose magnificently over the bay today just before we launched as first boat out from Kleinbaai harbour.
Once on anchor in the Shallows we had little time to wait as our first shark of the day appeared, and it was none other than a White shark…making this the 6th day now of White shark sightings! This was the female, approximately 4.0m in length with the upper lobe of the caudal fin missing, a shark that has been coming and going for the last 6 days and was seen only a few weeks ago. She stuck around the entire day being our first and last shark of the first day of March 2018. Today really was the day for those big female sharks, I’m talking both White and Copper sharks. We had the large female, just a tad bit smaller than 4.0m, with a large bite scar on the right side, cruising around for the first and second trip but keeping her distance compared to the larger female. We also had a very brief encounter with a large, very pale White shark on the first trip that unfortunately swam deep under the left side of the cage before disappearing and never showing itself again, could it possibly be a new individual to the bay? The Copper sharks that were seen were large females that would only risk a chance of approaching if the coast was clear of White sharks. A Short-tailed stingray kept us company throughout both trips gliding by as it pleased throughout the day.
