We launched a little later today, leaving the harbour at around 11:00 and anchoring in the shallows. It was a lovely morning on the ocean with the sun providing some welcome warmth. We waited on anchor for 3 hours, chatting about the orcas who have been helping themselves to our sharks amongst other things.
Half way through the trip, we had a Southern Giant Petrel join us. These impressive birds have a 2.1m wingspan and travel all the way from New Zealand to our waters. The Southern Giant Petrel is only differentiated from its northern counterpart by a green tip to the bill as opposed to a red tip. This little juvenile was so close we were able to see this quite clearly which is definitely not something that happens every day.
On the way back, we took a stop by Geyser Rock, an island that is only 3 hectares in size that houses an astonishing 60 000 Cape Fur Seals. We cruised by the seals a couple of times admiring their tomfoolery before heading back towards the harbour.
On the way back, we were joined by an inquisitive Sub Antarctic Skua, this large gull flew with us for some time before looking elsewhere for a bite to eat. Although it may not have been a great morning to view our favourite fishy friends, it was certainly a great time to be out on the sea appreciating nature in all its splendour.
