Sightings:  Great White Shark, Bronze whalers and Cape Fur seal

Location: Joubertsdam

Water Temperature: Moderate

Visibility: Poor

Today is exactly how every Sunday should be…bright, clear skies, a slight breeze on the water and sharks! We launched a tad bit later than usual today with tides and conditions dictating a little sleep in for us all however by 11:20am we were an anchor and began the patient game that is shark cage diving. A Bronze whaler appeared briefly in the next hour however it was a shy individual and would not stay at the surface long or approach the cage so an anchor change was decided on and with this we saw a number of Bronze whalers approach the boat, a couple of smaller, playful sharks and some incredibly bulky Bronze whaler adults. The activity seen from these sharks on our second site for the day was fantastic with an animal in view nearly at all times and to mix it up a Cape Fur seal appeared, darting amongst the sharks and chasing some of the smaller fish in the water. Towards the end of the trip was when the showstopper arrived, a Great White shark, cruising in deep, Shaun the shark sneakily approached from the back of the boat, this male White shark estimated at approximately 3.3m in length is one of our current favourites in the area and has been spotted on and off since the start of May this year. He made some spectacular passes by the boat and cage, even with some of the Bronze whaler sharks still moving close by. A spectacular finish to the morning out on sea.

The afternoon proceeded with our second trip of the day launching and making their way back into the Shallows to pick up cage, anchor and hopefully from where the first trip finished with the sharks. The Bronze whalers were first on site, those beautifully bronzed animals shining as they glided by before a large female Great White shark appeared about 30 minutes later. Making some stunning moves around the boat, this female is one that we have encountered in previous years and is a study animal for Dyer Island Conservation trust and visiting researchers in that a clamp has previously been attached to her dorsal fin for short term monitoring of movement and footage capture. She made some calm cruises by allowing all the appreciate the magnificence that is a White shark before kicking it up a notch with amazingly swift turns and surface breaks leaving guests and crew alike in awe. A perfect end to the day.
