Conditions: crystal clear water, calm flat sea, clear blue skies.

It doesn’t get much more perfect and beautiful for white shark watching than this! The conditions were awesome, with very little wind, no swell and crystal clear waters. We were out Bright and early for our first trip, and what a trip it was, 8 sharks in total frequented our boat. The first was a 3 m with very few markings and scars on it, which makes it difficult to identify. Later a shark we know as Jacob cruised by for a look see. Jacob is a 4 m mature male white shark who has been seen for a few weeks now in the bay.

Trip two saw 6 sharks in total. During the second trip we were lucky enough to have a visit from a shark we know as Pieter. However, in the morning our research vessel Lawazi had been out on a tagging trip with our research team. Pieter was one of 5 sharks tagged this morning with an acoustic tag for an ongoing movement monitoring research project being carried out here at marine dynamics. This tag will allow us to follow and track the movements of these sharks in the Gansbaai waters, so we can find out more about where they go, how fast they go and how long they spend in certain areas of the bay.

Trip three saw three sharks at the boat, with visibility so good, we could see the reef below us and the sharks approaching from deep below. A beautiful display of white shark vertical approach technique to the surface object could be seen from both the cage and the boat. Paisley, a 3.5 m male white shark which we have seen in the bay for a couple of months now was seen, another shark to have been tagged and tracked by our team in the morning. A really amazing day full of white shark action and beautiful conditions to go with it!
