  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Sightings: Bronze whaler sharks + Short-tail stingray + Bottlenose dolphins

Trip Summary: This weekend started pretty early for our divers! But it was certainly worth it! With a beautiful sunrise, within minutes of leaving the harbour, beautiful Sub-antarctic skuas started approaching our Slashfin boat! These curious seabirds got a pretty close look at themselves! Once we anchored at the diving spot "The Shallows" after a short wait the first Copper sharks (also called Bronze Whaler sharks) started to approach our cage. All our divers were amazed by their size and curiosity! In fact, this time again they came very close to us, showing off their beauty and leaving everyone spellbound! A very large short-tail stingray made its appearance from the sandy bottom. Its size astounded everyone! At the end of the second trip, a fast Cape Fur Seal also made an appearance! So many marine encounters in the ocean today! Our third trip of the day started off a little slow however it wasn't long into our first cage when the activity picked up and we had multiple Bronze Whaler sharks around. This was also seen for our second cage with our guests enjoying views of these stunning sharks both above and below water. We were also graced with the sighting of a Short-tail stingray along with a fantastic surprise sighting of a pod of Bottlenose dolphins moving by the boat. A fantastic afternoon out on the bay. Thank you to all our guests that joined the Marine Dynamics team today!
