  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Another slow start to the day today, but worth the wait! Our first trip started out quite slow with a 2 hour wait until the first shark arrived. This shark was just over 3 meters and had a very distinct scar on its left side. We know this shark quite well and have seen it numerous times in the past few weeks. It decided to hang out with us, but only long enough so that our divers were able to see it. After a few passes it returned to the depths, not to be seen again for the day. Our second trip had much more luck! Within 15 minutes of anchoring, a very curious 3 meter shark came cruising up. It was very dark on top with pale sides. Gradiation is normal for great whites, however the top of this shark was much darker than others and stood out to our biologists and crew. After spending quite some time passing by the cage, its curiosity turned into animal instinct and it became quite fiesty! It attacked the decoy numerous time, taking it down into the depths for a second before realizing that seal decoys arent as tasty as real seals! After an hour another shark who was 2.8 meters in length came by. It had very distinct spots on its sides and they looked a lot like freckles. This shark was actually more rambunctious than the previous shark. It attempted 4 attacks on our bait line, and succeeded twice at taking a couple of fish heads. Fortunately this isn't even enough food to be considered a small snack for great whites. After a few more passes, this shark also returned into the depths, not to be seen again. It was a great time with these sharks and we hope that they will return for our next trip!
