We could not have asked for a better start to our trip today than the sighting of a Southern Right Whale on route to our dive sight! These are incredible animals, not only for their size but also for their relaxed way of doing things. We could all learn something from how these animals simply just enjoy life! Our sister company, “Dyer Island Cruises”, also had a whale watching trip scheduled with some great sightings. We decided to leave the whales behind and carry on towards our dive sight, where we had action awaiting us! Our second shark was also our biggest one at 4 meters in length and also stayed with the boat for some time! A really great trip with some awesome sightings! Keep it up sharkies…
The weather was significantly warmer today than yesterday; however the water temp has gone done ever so slightly! It’s great that there was very little waiting time needed before the sharks started to arrive on the scene. We didn’t have the massive sharks around the cage today, but we did have some great personalities amongst the 3.7 meter ones. They kept giving some close passes and some nice open jaw photo opportunities. Conditions were very nice at sea, however some people did end up feeling a bit unwell, but well done in making it through it guys! Never the less everyone still got to see a Great white up close and in action! Great stuff guys…
Nothing short of incredible, that’s exactly how I would describe the entire day at Marine Dynamics! The morning started off early with us having to collect a dead Great White Shark off of Dyer Island, this made for some very labour intensive efforts from some of our crew members. I took my leave (just before the hard work started :) ) in order to collect our clients for our shark trip that was scheduled for that very afternoon! After briefing the clients on what to expect on the water I was pleased to be able to show them the remains of the shark in the harbour! Believe me, after today’s shark activity they all prefer to see this amazing animal alive and free rather than dead. I took some pictures of the deceased shark, however I have handed it over to one of my colleagues who will be making a full press release in the near future! So watch this space…
Today was definitely the right day for you to have packed in your winter jacket and fortunately enough we had jackets ready for all our guests! The start of our trip took us past Geyser Rock and Dyer Island for some seal viewing; it was here where we got more viewing than we had bargained for! It was truly a sad sight to have seen a Great White Shark dead on the rocks of Dyer Island. The cause of death is as of yet unknown and we are currently in the process of identifying the individual. The trip did carry on to what I think was a spectacular day! We had loads of sharks and the sighting of a massive female which was not only 4 meters in length but had massive girth. I like to refer to her as “The Bus”! What a tremendous day…
Have you ever pet a shark (not that we condone shark petting!)? Shark skin is smooth if you rub them from head to tail, but rough if you go tail to head. This is because shark skin is actually teeth and this shark blog explains all about it…
Even though the water temperature has dropped about two degrees over the last couple of days, the fact that the sun was out in full force made up for it all! We were once again the only boat out on the water today which meant that we had all the sharks in the area all to ourselves! The conditions on the water were very pleasant with great weather for working on ones tan, not that I need any more tanning :)! Our sharks arrived in a matter of seconds and the first bunch were all massive females around the 4 meter mark! Great to start off big and maintain it throughout the trip! We were also lucky to conclude the trip with a terrific sighting of a Southern Right Whale on the horizon! Exceptional day…
We were the only shark cage diving company out on the water today, due to the fact that our boat Slash Fin can cope very well with the bigger weather conditions. The conditions at sea were actually quite pleasant and not at all what they predicted on the forecast! We were also very fortunate that the spot we chose today had three sharks already on site when we arrived! I am also so glad that the clients who had dire fears of great whites were converted to the light! They are beautiful animals which deserve our respect and not our fears. We were also treated to a spectacular sight today; a Cape Gannet plunged into the water just a meter from our boat. It barely missed one of our crew members heads as it was chasing after its prey. These birds are remarkable in the fact that they can hit the water at speeds of over a 100 km/h! What a treat to be able to see it in action…
Today we had predominently male sharks – perhaps they knew it was fathers day! Due to a North westerly wind picking up we were limited as to where we could dive , so we setlled on anchor in lthe lee of Dyer island just outside the mouth of Shark Alley. It seems that some of the sharks we have been working with on the adjacent side of the island days before, made the same decision.. much to our delight!
Today we had a remarkable trip. After anchoring on a Western Reef of Dyer Island we saw 15 individual sharks some measuring over 4 meters in length! Roughly 70% of our sightings were animals we have been seeing over the last few weeks. ‘Trevor’ named by one of of our interns from England Oliver, stole the show, and at almost 4 meters long this male new he was dominant and entitled to first investigation of the bait line!
We were on the “Love Boat” today and not on “Slash Fin”. We had two honeymoon couples on board as well as a group of friends celebrating a 21st birthday, hence the reason I say that there was lots of love on the boat. Everyone was in high spirits and I believe the guys who stayed out late last night found it a bit more difficult to cope with the swell today :)! The sharks were stupendous and very quick to arrive on the scene. We had another sighting of small “Nemo” today as well as “Lumpy”; both sharks have been spotted on several occasions over the past weeks! It’s always great to see some old friends…
