Pioneers of Change
Toby Rogers
Past Marine Biologist
Toby’s journey with Marine Dynamics began in 2012 with his BSc Oceanography Thesis Project (University of Liverpool) studying Great White sharks. After completing his MSc in Marine Biology (Bangor University), Toby ventured into the Middle East where he served as a Marine Consultant, specialising in seagrass, coral, and mangrove restoration and relocation projects. His expertise and dedication to marine conservation brought him back to South Africa and Marine Dynamics in 2017.
At Marine Dynamics, Toby served as a guiding biologist, educating clients and gathering crucial observational data on marine life. He has been instrumental in establishing the skills-based internship programme within the Marine Dynamics Academy. Toby designed comprehensive programme materials aimed at university students, encompassing practical and theoretical training in areas such as BRUVs (Baited Remote Underwater Videos), tagging and tracking techniques, data analysis, GIS mapping, seabird rehabilitation, photogrammetry, and essential soft skills like public speaking, teamwork, and critical thinking.
Toby’s strategic efforts extended beyond programme development. He spearheaded the marketing of the internship programme, forging valuable partnerships with numerous universities across the UK. His initiatives not only enhanced the programme’s visibility but also significantly increased revenue from this core region, while fostering future scientific collaborations.
Currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Cape Town, Toby’s research focuses on understanding the movement ecology of the Bronze Whaler shark using advanced techniques like acoustic telemetry and dart tagging. His research is poised to contribute valuable insights into the conservation and management of marine species.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Toby remains actively involved with Marine Dynamics and the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, consulting on various projects including Marine Protected Area monitoring and management. His multifaceted contributions underscore his commitment to advancing marine conservation efforts and promoting sustainable practices within the field.
