Pioneers of Change
Michelle Jewel
Past Marine Dynamics Biologist
Michelle Jewel, originally from Michigan, USA, has long been entranced by the enigmatic world beneath the ocean’s surface, viewing it as a realm ripe with scientific discovery and conservation challenges. Her academic journey began with a BSc in Zoology with honours from Michigan State University, where her fascination with animal behaviour, particularly predator-prey dynamics, blossomed. Michelle’s quest for knowledge and passion for wildlife conservation led her on a global adventure, culminating in her immersion into the rich marine biodiversity of Gansbaai, South Africa, as part of the Marine Dynamics team.
At Marine Dynamics, Michelle focused her research on the behavioural ecology of Great White sharks and Cape fur seals, guided by Prof. Justin O’Riain and Prof. Les Underhill at the University of Cape Town. Her work shed light on the intricate interactions within predator-prey systems, particularly under the influence of climate change and trophic cascades. Michelle’s expertise extends beyond academia; she is a skilled science communicator, on-screen expert host, and award-winning photographer. Her ability to blend scientific rigour with engaging storytelling has made her a sought-after communicator, adept at bridging the gap between research and public understanding.
Michelle connects people with the science that affects their daily lives by creating exciting science communication pieces and engagement activities. With over a decade of experience, she has effectively communicated the complexities and achievements of research, managed projects, teams, and engagement programmes, and developed online communication strategies.
Currently, Michelle serves as the Communications & Engagement Manager at the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. In this role, she continues to apply her expertise in science communication to foster understanding and action on climate adaptation science.
Michelle’s journey exemplifies her commitment to exploring and protecting marine ecosystems while inspiring others to appreciate and safeguard our planet’s natural wonders. Her multifaceted roles as a scientist, communicator, and advocate underscore her mission to connect people with the science that shapes our understanding of the world around us.
