Pioneers of Change

Kelly Baker

Past Marine Biologist

Kelly’s lifelong affinity for the ocean stems from growing up near its shores, captivated by its mysteries—from bustling rock pools to the enigmatic depths harbouring rare or undiscovered creatures. Fuelled by this fascination, Kelly pursued a Bachelor of Biological Sciences at the University of Wollongong, where her academic journey solidified her passion for marine life.

In 2014, Kelly’s dream of working with sharks materialised when she joined Marine Dynamics Academy as a volunteer before transitioning into a vital role within the biology team. Her days were primarily spent on the water, leading shark diving tours where she not only guided guests but also shared knowledge and fostered conservation awareness. Kelly diligently collected and maintained extensive observational and photographic data, crucial for ongoing Great White shark research conducted in collaboration with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust.

Beyond guiding tours, Kelly played a pivotal role in global education initiatives, collaborating with students worldwide on studies involving smaller shark species. She contributed to estuary monitoring efforts, participated in shark dissections for research purposes, and assisted in responding to marine animal strandings, showcasing her commitment to comprehensive marine ecosystem management.
