Dickie Chivell
Skipper
You might recognise Dickie Chivell from his daring feats on Shark Week, where he has wowed audiences with his close encounters and stunts with Great White sharks. However, there is much more to Dickie behind the scenes.
Dickie is an accomplished skipper and a qualified commercial diver, bringing extensive experience and skill to his marine adventures. As a certified scuba diving instructor, he has a deep understanding of the underwater world, ensuring safe and exhilarating experiences for all. Additionally, he has completed a comprehensive Marine Guiding course, making him an informative and engaging guide.
A dedicated conservationist, Dickie is highly knowledgeable about the Marine Big Five of the Greater Dyer Island Ecosystem in Gansbaai, South Africa. His work in marine conservation is extensive, having supported The Dyer Island Conservation Trust in great white shark tagging and tracking alongside alumni Marine Biologist Alison Towner. His efforts contribute significantly to the protection and understanding of these majestic creatures.
Beyond his on-the-water expertise, Dickie is a skilled marine life photographer and has completed a short course in video journalism. His ability to capture the beauty and intricacies of marine life through the lens adds another layer to his conservation efforts, helping to raise awareness and inspire others.
Dickie’s passion for marine life has taken him around the world. He has worked with Grey Whales in Baja, filmed with Discovery Channel in New Zealand, and explored various shark hotspots such as California and Guadalupe. His appearances on Shark Week from 2014 have been transformative, allowing him to collaborate with renowned figures like Chris Fallows, Jeff Kurr, and Andy Brandy Casagrande.
As a true ambassador of marine conservation, Dickie’s commitment to the ocean is unwavering. His work with Marine Dynamics Shark & Whale Tours not only showcases his skills but also his dedication to educating and inspiring others about marine life. Dickie is the son of Marine Dynamics Tourism Group CEO, Wilfred Chivell, and his passion for the sea runs deep in the family.
When Dickie isn’t on a boat or engaged in conservation efforts, you can find him on his surfboard, catching waves and enjoying the thrill of surfing. His love for the ocean is evident in every aspect of his life.
“I am extremely grateful for the travel adventures, meeting inspirational people from around the world, and learning new things through working with Marine Dynamics.”
Dickie’s hero in the wildlife filming world is the legendary David Attenborough. He resonates with Attenborough’s belief that “An understanding of the natural world and what’s in it is a source of not only a great curiosity but great fulfilment.”
