Champion of Marine Conservation
Wilfred Chivell, the driving force behind Marine Dynamics Shark & Whale Tours and the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, embodies a relentless pursuit of excellence and a deep-seated commitment to marine conservation. His philosophy, “Just do it… RIGHT!” underpins every aspect of his work and life.
Wilfred’s leadership has transformed Marine Dynamics into a world-renowned hub for marine ecotourism and conservation. His meticulous attention to detail ensures that every guest receives an exceptional experience, from the comfort of the custom-designed boats to the pristine, freshly laundered gear provided onboard. His dedication extends to his team, which includes marine biologists, dive masters, and expert guides, all working together to educate and inspire guests about marine life.
Born and raised in Gansbaai, Wilfred’s intimate knowledge of the local marine environment has been instrumental in his success. Wilfred pioneered the concept of the Marine Big 5 – whales, sharks, dolphins, penguins, and seals — which has become a benchmark in marine tourism. Under his leadership, Marine Dynamics Shark & Whale Tours have garnered numerous international awards, including Responsible Tourism awards and recognition for sustainable ecotourism practices.
Wilfred’s passion for conservation has led to significant contributions to protecting marine life. He established the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, focusing on research, rescue, and rehabilitation of marine species. His initiatives, such as the African penguin nest project, have received acclaim and awards globally. Wilfred is also a vital part of the South African Whale Disentanglement Network, showcasing his hands-on commitment to marine welfare.
Wilfred’s career is a testament to his adventurous spirit and dedication to nature. From his early days in the Police Force to shipwreck and diamond diving, he has always sought new challenges and opportunities. His discovery of the Nicobar wreck, the largest find of copper-plate money in the world, remains a highlight of his adventurous pursuits.
Beyond his professional achievements, Wilfred is a devoted father and an active member of the Gansbaai community. He has served on the town council, co-founded Gansbaai Tourism, and supports various local initiatives.
Wilfred’s profound connection to the ocean drives his mission to protect vulnerable marine species. He challenges misconceptions about apex predators like the Great White shark, advocating for their survival and highlighting their role in the marine ecosystem. His work ensures that guests not only experience the thrill of encountering sharks but also leave with a greater understanding and empathy for their plight.
“People come for the thrill of facing their fears, but they leave with a deeper appreciation for these magnificent creatures. Great White sharks are not ruthless man-eaters; they are incredible survivors facing dire threats from mankind. Our mission is to protect sharks and all marine life for future generations.”
Wilfred Chivell’s unwavering dedication to marine conservation and sustainable tourism continues to inspire and make a difference.
