Hennie Otto

Chief Operational Officer & Skipper

Hennie Otto, the Chief Operating Officer and Skipper at Marine Dynamics, views his role not as a job, but as a “full-time paid holiday and a way of life.” With a passion for the ocean and its inhabitants, Hennie finds immense privilege in working closely with nature, ensuring every day brings a new adventure.

Hennie is a seasoned skipper whose journey with the sea began years ago as the owner of a commercial fishing boat. His extensive experience in the commercial line fishing industry around Gansbaai and Cape Agulhas since 1990 has provided him with unparalleled knowledge of local marine life and ecosystems. He knows the underwater landscape intimately, from the rich kelp forests to the hunting grounds of the sharks.

In September 2008, Hennie made a significant shift from commercial fishing to marine conservation, joining Marine Dynamics as a skipper. This transition marked a new chapter in his life, where he traded exploitation for protection, earning his living by safeguarding the ocean’s wildlife. Hennie finds this role to be both an honour and a privilege, aligning with his deep-rooted love for the sea.

With a background in Zoology and Geography, Hennie’s interest in animals and their behaviours in diverse habitats is profound. His early career included serving as a research coordinator at Irvin & Johnson’s abalone culture facility at Danger Point, where he delved into the field of parasitology. Hennie has shared his expertise at various international marine science and parasitology symposia, including a presentation at Texas A&M University.

Hennie remains actively involved in research, collaborating with universities such as Limpopo and the North-West University (Potchefstroom) on studies examining the prevalence of parasites on top marine predators and fish species, as well as the bioaccumulation of toxic substances in the ocean’s food chain. His work underscores the intricate balance of nature and the importance of understanding how small changes can have far-reaching impacts on marine ecosystems and human health.

Hennie plays a crucial role in the smooth operation of our vessels. He ensures that the vessel is adequately crewed, provisioned, and maintained to meet the specific requirements of each trip. His meticulous attention to detail guarantees compliance with all relevant South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) requirements, providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all guests.

A versatile all-rounder, Hennie is not only knowledgeable about marine life but also an expert with cameras, helping guests capture those once-in-a-lifetime shots. His enthusiasm for seabirds, both vagrant and resident, adds another layer of expertise, making every expedition informative and engaging.

“Nature is so amazing — the more we learn, the more we realise how little we know. It is fascinating, yet crucial, to understand how a tiny toxic algal cell can impact the entire marine food chain, ultimately affecting humans. Marine Dynamics is all about increasing knowledge and finding ways to protect and preserve these delicate balances.”

Hennie Otto’s dedication to marine conservation and his wealth of experience make him an invaluable asset to Marine Dynamics. His passion and commitment to protecting marine life inspire both his team and the countless guests who join their voyages, ensuring that the magic and mystery of the ocean continue to be cherished and safeguarded for future generations.
