  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark! 

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature. 

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Hermanus Marine Evening

Marine Dynamics is a Shark Cage Diving company based in Kleinbaai, a small harbour town, part of Gansbaai in the Western Cape of South Africa. This area is known as a hotspot for the Great White Shark and the best place in the world to see and dive with these iconic creatures in their natural environment.

Tourism roll players, hotel- and guest house owners were invited to join Marine Dynamics Shark and Whale Tours for a Marine Evening on 12 May at the Hermanus Auditorium. 

Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, opened the evening saying that “one has to acknowledge the immense contribution Wilfred Chivell continues to make in the conservation of marine life and the oceans economy”.

CEO of Marine Dynamics and Founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, Wilfred Chivell, invited those attending the evening, to become our tourism partners. “When booking your guests on a Marine Dynamics Shark and Whale Tour in Kleinbaai, Gansbaai, it’s a win win for everyone, guests get to stay at least another day or two in Hermanus, supporting the local economy” Chivell explained. 

The Marine Dynamics Shark and Whale Tours world class fleet was introduced to guests by Operations Manager, Hennie Otto, promising comfort, the best whale- and shark watching opportunities and internationally recognised operating procedures in place, ensuring the safety of everyone aboard. 

Marine Biologists, Jade Soekhoe and Alina Pryazhkina, shared their personal experiences as the guides on the shark- and whale boats.  Alina spoke about the new shark stars, the bronze whaler sharks, adored by guests of all ages. Jade explained why guests can look forward to a bumper whale season for 2022. 

Pinkey Ngewu, Manager of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, highlighted the work the Trust does, educating young learners from the Masakhane Primary School to become future ocean ambassadors. “Booking a trip with Marine Dynamics Shark and Whale Tours, enables us to provide environmental education to these young learners, our future leaders” said Ngewu. 

Senior Bird Rehabilitator, Xolani Lawo, had the audience roaring with laughter, explaining his complex love hate relationship with the endangered African Penguin.  He also reminded the audience of the importance of protecting the last 1000 African Penguin breading pairs on Dyer Island. The African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary has been rated as the Number 1 Top Attraction in Gansbaai on Tripadviser, open daily and free entrance. 

The message of the evening was clear, Marine Dynamics Shark and Whale Tours is a world class ecotourism organisation, invested in attracting tourists from across the globe to the Overstrand.
