Finally the time of year I look forward to the most has arrived, big female September! There is something about a large female white shark that is incredibly gracious and elegant yet at the same time their behavior is so deliberate. In contrast to the juvenile white sharks we also see in summer months, these large ladies really like to dominate the scene often slowly circling our cage diving vessel inquisitively, checking out the divers rather than rushing the bait. They make for the perfect diving sharks and our two guests who privately chartered the boat to themselves today were utterly spoiled for sightings, despite the terrible viz! ‘Maureen’ is a 4.5m female shark and was SPOT tagged in Struisbaai during June last year. She has made an unbelievable round trip migration to Mozambique and Madagascar only to show up at our boat today to show off her fat stomach! She is such an amazing creature and despite the fact that her lower tail lobe has been bitten clean off by another shark, she still manages to get around just fine. Another female had a very dark black pigmentation spot on her face so the crew could not resist but name her Marilyn! In all, a great day out for everyone on SA’s Heritage/National Braai day!
