Whilst alarms clocks had to be set extra early this morning and the sun didn’t start to show itself until we made our way down to the harbour it truly was a beautfiul morning to be awake with the sunrise absolutely magnificent as we made our way to the Islands. We arrived at our diving area and witnessed two breaches as one of the others boats pulled a seal decoy around the area, what a way to start any day…sharks flying out of the water into the sunrise pink stained skies! Once on anchor we did not have long to wait for our first sharks to arrive with two large females spotted almost at the same time. Many of the sharks we saw this morning were ones we have seen recently, both in the Shallows last week and also at the Island after we made the move to our Winter diving spot. The regulars included two very large females, one we have in the system dating back to 2010! We also had a smaller male around, known as “Cutfin”, due the damage to its’ fin and a very little juvenile, estimated at approximately 2.0m in length yet very active and quick and he moved here and there.
The second trip got started almost immediately after we settled back on anchor and the activity continued non-stop throughout this trip. Yet again we saw many of the same sharks from the first trip with the addition of a large female, frequent at the boat since we have been diving in the Geldsteen, and one you have to keep your eye on as she seems to have her hunting abilities down to a fine art as she strikes fast and out of no-where! We also had “Cutfin” back again however he was a little more active on this trip and exhibited some of the behaviour we are used to seeing from him, including the slow glides on the surface with jaws open a little.
A fantastic afternoon to be out on the sea for our third trip with the regular sharks at the moment. Ranging from the 2.0m very active juvenile giving us all an excellent show, to the mature, 4.0m+ females very sneakily grabbing the decoy without much warning proving what amazing preditors these animals are. This afternoon we had 5 children on board under the age of 9, what a fantastic way to introduce children to the White shark, where they can see and learn that these animals are not the scary sea monsters they have been made out to be, but amazingly graceful, interesting and powerful creatures that deserve respect. All three of our trips today enjoyed a cruise through Shark Alley to take in the sights of the Islands including the Cape Fur seals and African penguins. A true blessing to be with the sharks today for our guests, the crew and volunteers…
